Iolite often named "water sapphire" makes the perfect substitute to sapphire when looking for a september birthday present. It can display a beautiful blue and violet hue making this a particularly striking gemstone. Iolite comes from the Greek word “ios,” meaning “violet" and measures 7 - 7.5 on the MOH scale of hardness.
